ran hwang’s button pin art is nothing short of spectacular. she hammers pins to secure buttons into the wall, but doesn’t use any adhesive. over time, the buttons may fall, but that is part of the transience of her piece of art. the process of hammering the pins into the wall is for her a form of meditative practice, akin to the raking of rock gardens which monks undertake in temples.

i like the idea behind this work. the artist, nick gentry, salvages discarded media storage and paints portraits on them. his point being that we often lose so many stories when transitioning from one type of medium to the other. the faces on the works and the readable labels on the disks provoke thoughts about what stories are held within the portrait’s canvas. how many times have you lost documents, music and photos when upgrading your computer?

willard wigan had an unenviable childhood, filled with ridicule and riddled with learning disability. the few human friends he had led him to look for friends elsewhere. at the age of 5, he began building miniature houses for his ant friends. fast-forward many years and here he is, an adult, making sculptures that fit within the eye of a needle. so small that he works with a microscope to create his art and has adapted his breath and movement to have the necessary stillness to make such art.
